| It's a wooden rot pile......don't believe a single word said or written by any broker...The CC is a horrible flat bottomed boat, okay for rivers and flat water. I guarantee the first waves you hit with that thing will see planks falling off and water coming in....the systems alone will be a nightmare, but there are rot pockets everywhere.... This....with the same amount of work and money spent on restoration....will be a far better boat.....the CC will be worth something only if you do a museum level restoration. http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1970.../United-States

| When you buy, whatever you buy, cease looking around and be very contented with what you have... Regrets and later "what-Iffs" are not conducive of personal wellbeing, spiritually... May your deity guide and bless you and your efforts...

The little ship is very nice too, but has much less attractive accommodation as a liveaboard! If I were in your shoes I would inspect both thoroughly, but tend towards the De Fever. (assuming that both will end up about equal when restored to same condition) And I share TADīs opinion about the rot pile! When you see that much rot in the few pictures already, be sure there is a "bit" more hidden. And a seagoing boat is a different animal. To your question "whats wrong": It is a woody and 40 years old. The average boater fears such boat. Thats it probably. Regards Richard |

| That's right there are Fanie, it's a whopping paint in the ass. I can't have the boat I really like cause it don't go on the water I want. Then there are countless I might salvage for parts that are close but rotted out. Many would almost work. Drives me nuts. This is my retirement build, after all these years building for some fool I finally want to build something for myself. I could put a widgeon style deck structure on ole Teds hull and still be reasonably close to the original and end up with a blue water cruiser that has the woodwork I want. I would have to have a weight budget for the change but it seems doable. Ild buy something closer if I could find it but I'm **** out of luck no mater which way I turn |

| Boston, you are right where most of us have been and I might still be there. I looked for a steel hull Roamer or Inland Seas boat for the hull (1/2") steel for some time. Talked to many who said they could correct the hull with angled skegs or other methods to allow for reasonable salt water use. My idea fix the hull and drive components and launch it doing all the interiors and topsides while floating. Fastest way to the water was my goal. Since health gave me a warning sign and I moved to Tennessee from the pacific northwest I had to can that idea. Now I am on the Tenn. river system some 600 miles long with 2 routes to the gulf and 1 to the great lakes-my plans have changed. I decided to build a cataraman capable of high speed some 32' x 10' beam capable of salt water usage in a smart way. Now money and usage became a problem. Finally determined that 95% of my usage would be on the Tenn. river system and I did not need this expensive build with capabilities far beyond my personal usage. So what to do now??? Revise my Cataraman thoughts for river and lakes. Using similar designs build a form of houseboat was my current answer. Cat type houseboat frames were basically 24" x 24" and I could just about knock them all out in a days work rather then the angled, climbing diminision ones for the Cat. It will still be great looking as the Cat was it just will not have the speed but will have twin, though smaller outboards. This was my sacrafice due to my current conditions and will be trailerable and about the same size as the cat. Take your time, closely examine your usage over time and then build something or re-design and re-hab something that will work for you and that you will be proud of. One boat cannot fill all needs. My lifeboat will be fast, nimble and a fun way to enjoy speed. Enjoy the process. Stan Unless you are going to be a professional fisherman you arn't going to want to be out in the slop and wind of the pacific northwest. It is not fun nor relaxing and it is only for the very experienced boatman. I've been a fair weather pilot for 50 years and I'm going to be a fair weather power sailor for the rest of my years. Those judgements are part of the reason I'm still around. Just getting out the Columbia river bar west of Portland can put the fear of God in most any mariner. |
