| Cool, I was thinking of aircraft wings into sails for this ultralight amphib I figure since it is a cat hull instead of standard RIB hull it might take to sailing better. You land on some remote lake or inlet, then sail quietly around for a bit. If you could fold the wings for sailing, you should also be able to fold them for DRIVING ON THE STREET as this unit already sports tires! Of course, you might need to add a belt drive to at least one tire because relying on prop blast in traffic would cause problems. P1018452 I'm not sure how those wings are put together, but since they are disassemble-able it shouldn't be impossible to design one that can fold. I'm a firm believer that with quickly and exponentially improving CAD/CAM/Materials- Toys wont be just getting cheaper & better, but we will live to see a lot of cool things never before possible become practical. |

| Like I said, it is a nice dream - but still very far (say, 100 years?) from becoming reality. Apparently no serious structural and powering considerations have been faced when creating these renderings. For example, it is not clear how are sail/wing forces to be transmitted to the mast and then to the hull. Where are the aerodynamic control surfaces for the flight mode and how are they controlled? How are the directional control and stability ensured in sailing mode? Did they think about weight of all the folding/furling mechanisms installed, and their structural feasibility? How do they ensure that the craft doesn't dive in, pitch up and break in pieces during takeoffs and landings? Etc. However, I like the styling and a kind of creative purity, or innocence, of this idea. I do see it as a nice and elegant craft for the princess Leia in the next Star Wars episode. ![]() |

| Not very practical, to fly everything has to be very light and flimsy, to be a ship it has to be very strong. do not go sailing in a aircraft, and do not go flying in a boat. the other question is, why? For the cost of one of those he can have a fleet of yachts around the world, and where ever he flys in his private jet, he can go sailing. It would save him money and be much more enjoyable. |

| How about a PBY or Grumman Duck with Navy style folding wings? I believe some carrier-based prop planes had wings that folded up, then back, so folding in two dimensions is doable and that was 60+ years ago. I believe they also locked into folding pretty well and normally didn't need further rigging when sitting up on the flight deck of a carrier doing 30 knots into 30 knot wind, and other aircraft prop blast to boot. They seem to be able to park and wheel the planes around without much regard to direction of the considerable wind. OK, now a mono-hull seaplane with shoulder wing is going to have stability issues if it tries to use already high mounted wings folded up even higher, with an already very narrow hull. I remember seeing a proto-type WW2 German seaplane with mono-hull, and stuka gull wings with fairly short balancing floats at the lowest part of the wing, with engine up high on front and back of center fuselage and twin boom tails coming back off the lowest part of wing. The front engine was over the cockpit and windsheild was raked FORWARD then streamlined into bow-rake....so I guess you had a lot of 'face space' if sitting normally, and had sunshade, and REALLY good view of the water. Seemed to make some sense(as long a wave doesn't come through the windshield on takeoff/landing) because what is under a plane matters more than the "air column" above it, except for diving enemy fighters. But THAT design might work as Folding Wing Sailing Seaplane as it looked like the floats would make it stable and wings wouldn't be too high on the center of gravity if folded, and the fold would be at an existing Strong Point of the wing at the floats. |
