Oarlock Position

This may seem trivial...

Where is the optimal location for fixed oarlocks on a classic narrow wooden dinghy? I've suggested that it should be about even with the aft edge of the seat.

Anyone have a more scientific answer?

Usually they go about 8-10" aft of the thwart. The thwart should be about 8"-9" bellow the oarlock base

rowlock position

My father and I have built many rowing boats, and we always used a measurement from his parents - 9" from the rear edge of the seat.
