Number of crew members on a stern trawler

Hello!

Does anyone know how to determine number of crew members on a stern trawler? Maybe depending on length or some other parameter?

Thank You in advance!

Technolgy dependent. I do not know where they are now but I was asea for 5.5 months on one (The 298ft. Arctic Trawler) in 1980 and we had a crew of 40 while a smaller boat with us (The Northwest Enterprize) had a crew of 15 and was able to catch much more fish. This is a very broad question you are asking - I know little pocket trawlers of 108 feet that have a crew of five. I worked on a 50 ft'r for a week in '74 and the crew was 2. That said, I have some strong feeling about hard-on-the-bottom trawling that I formed thru having done it. Mid-water, no problem. Hard-on-bottom, don't have any part of it. It is too destructive to the environment.

Thank You. I agree about bottom trawling. Trawler in question will have some 25-30 m.

Figure out what jobs need to be done and then how many people it takes to do them. Add in a little redundancy (not everyone can sleep at the same time) and it's a start.

SOLAS is a minimum for safe navigation, not the number needed to actually work. Same with COI requirements.

Thank You, You have all been very helpfull! I have also found an old article, about the suject. I'll post it here later, so You can tell what You think. I think that SOLAS combined with that will give pretty accurate number.
