| Noodling... Hello... As per Dave Gerr (boat noodling) I would like to ask who else may have this nagging problem... You own an old and slow boat but one that you can afford - a same computer and some boat design software - a lot of books about boats and boat design - your job physically wears you out some times... So you seem to suffer from AFTMBDS (adult attention from too many boat designs syndrome) and you end up feeling like you never really get anything done...  As a hobby you have no deadlines - no guidelines - no grumpy boss (other than your wife holding the vacuum cleaner in your face) and an unlimited budget coupled with the instant gratification of 3D modelling software... How to narrow down the next 'REAL' boat in your life... Anyone else suffering from AFTMBDS...  |

| Come on Sean you can fess up, my wife has been talking to you. I haven’t bought a boat design book in weeks, mainly because it’s getting harder to find ones I don’t have or can afford.  Gary

| You see... Hello... You see - just now my wife wants me to go to the city pound and walk dogs (I hate looking at the poor buggers) - thats when she gets back from cleaning cat cages at the SPCA (we have four now) - she is a goer... Me - I am looking at a full keeled double ender under 22 feet (on my monitor of course) - slow - knowing I should be working on the trimaran - fast - or the garvey commuter - a 25 knot boat that would allow me to commute and work at a welded aluminum boat builder - fun... You see - I have troubles - I need pills - I need focus pills - not to be arrogant but it is hard to explain my 'situation' to the average bloke who trades penny stocks for a living... Adult attention from too many boat designs syndrome or AFTMBDS - plus a rainy day - I wanted to fix my fuel line troubles... Life is hard - I always wear a helmet... I say - for the journals - that this be pronounced 'AFT-MIBS'... 'I am suffering from Aftmibs' - oh I know, it is horrible, let me buy you a coffee and give you a number for a group I go to... SH. |

| A disease I acquired in childhood. Therapist says no cure. Unfortunately I am a carrier. Many innocent lives have been destroyed from my contact. A partial relief of symptoms can be found in model building and testing but concentration often wanders anyway. Contra-indications include messy work shop, loss of appetite, sleep loss and everything from the lawn mower to your wifes nail polish falls under consideration for boat parts. Finally, they say, you must sit down and actually consider how you would really use a vessel... I mean reality stuff, not fantasy. There is where I cannot get to. Do you think it is terminal doc? |

| Some fun... Hello... OK here we go - a lot of us are capable of designing and building - some do either or both for a living... I am suffering from commitment troubles really - so for fun - lets ask what would your next boat be given the parameters of your own lives and commitments, budget, wants, and past boats that gave you a platform for thought... Me - I have this little beachcruiser, sliding canopy, electric Minkota powered, solar charged, 8 foot 'berthable', sit-down and drive, trimaran that has been bugging me since I was 20 years old - WHY - well - simple and cheap to keep - fast for weekend tripping - canopy for year round sailing - electrics for simplicity - trimaran so I can stil mix a drink at say 16 knots... AND YOU... SH. |

| My philosophy is that you don't design the boats, they design themselves. They compete against each other. Sometimes one design gets lazy and doesn't make much progress, so its file sits around and collects dust. Meanwhile, another design is hungry. It's putting itself together, optimizing itself, working out the rough spots, and giving the other designs a run for their money. Whichever design gets itself drawn and built first, that's the one you use. |

| Just the other day I reopened the design that is my current distraction from getting anything done. 25’ LOL, 7.5’ beam, 18” draft, 3500lb displacement, open forward cockpit, cabin with large WC, powered by 10hp electric inboard. Inspired by William J Deed, I have drifted a bit from his original intention but that is what noodling is about. Anyone can just buy a plan. I only have about a million details to work out and it will be done Gary

| Pick what fits your $ and your ability level. No amateur builder/designer/sailor (or powerboater) should attempt to build an ocean passagmaker, whereas it would be pure idiocy for an experienced builder/designer/sailor (or powerboater) to build a small rowboat (unless they fancy tiny boats.). Ability and $ are the primary concerns. Improve your skills and do something that fits your ability and $ amount.

| I like golf...Common sense works but is often difficult to use when dealing with emotional topics...like boats.
