why encourage him. He is a total nutter.

When you google him you find things like pico egg shape boat, submarines, spinning telescope lenses etc etc. A huge amount of drivel and no substance. Last time I recall him on the internet he said he was being persecuted in Turkey and needed a boat to escape.

It the boat is small it may be some drug smuggling thing. Or maybe he has forgotten his medication. Either way, he is on no account serious about building a boat and sailing anywhere. To the best that I can tell, he gets an idea, talks about it on internet forums, gets bored, thinks of another idea, puts it up on internet forums and so on and so on.

there was an american once... going solohanded across the atlantic and sinking his boat some hundred miles off the canarian islands...
made it still to the carabean in a liferaft within 73 days - i think...

but he had 2 solar-desalinators with him and caught fish with an harpune from the flock following him... too much sushi for my liking...

yes there is a great book written by him.

"a drift" or something. He was extremely well prepared though. Had emergency beacon (this was 1979 or 80) that was supposed to send emergency signal to air traffic. He also saw some 5 boats that he shot flares to - none saw him. Tells very real facts of how invisible one is in a small life raft.

Book is far less melodramatic than the one by the alain bombard. He was a boat builder too - the boat he wrecked was built by himself and he had crossed the Atlantic with his friend and was coming back solo. He suspected hitting a whale or container or something similar.

Had a ready evacuate bag with spear fishing gear tons of flares distilling equipment and other essentials. Lost a ton of weight and was in bad shape but ate proteins all the way through the trip - lack of fiber and vitamins was the hard part (and lack of water). I guess multivitamin pack for 100 days would make sense in the emergency gear. And maybe 2kg of oatmeal - 30 grams a day would make a difference.

i read his book as well...
very good and tells you a lot about situations like this... without proper gear you are really lost and dead meat from the begining...
after a few cargo-vessels passed him without taking any notice of his flares he actually was more afraid of one of those ships running over him than rescueing him...

taking his experience from this 'voyage' he actually designed a more suitable life-raft... that could be sailed and steered to a certain degree...
he has a patent on those but i think it never was very successfull comercially speaking...

probably thats the stuff our mtummut would need...

Experiance them once and you will never again want to sit in any kind of simi-wet raft/boat.

One of my first student engineering projects was to design a solar still for desalinating water- it worked- sort of...
That guy who wrote Adrift had two army surplus desalinators - the type are like beach balls- you inflate them and put the sea water in a little cup at bottom- the water evaporates and collects on the inside of ball, drips down... you get the ideal.

Way back when A. Bell was working on a desalinator for the folks who got lost in dories on the Grand Banks. Used the cold water to condense somehow I think..

Sounds like a neat ideal this voyage.
Bring along a couple of friends, at least you won't go hungry.
