I've been told that the hydraulic outhaul adjustment broke, allowing the load to move inboard to where the boom wasn't reinforced for it. That set off a whole chain of events.

Carbon is stiff and strong, but not at all forgiving.

NZ's boom

What I don't understand is why they would go with that design and lose the unmeasured area all the other booms enjoyed
