I had an idea some time ago as a way to light up a boat... use optical fibres!

there is even a company now who uses this idea to provide lighting solutions

Looks interesting but seriously, why? Guess it depends wether you want to be in a boat or a christmas tree - are we talking about the inside or the outside?

Well Yes, checked out your website and the following questions spring to mind, Grat for the day but surely the main aim for lighting is when it's dark? What do we do use something else at night - two systems? and that large collector up there in your rigging, not very practical is it so again why? (a power vessel would generate enough power to run a lighting system as it stands)

Would have seemed to be a good idea if you could be able to store the energy for night lighting... but the web site doesn't mention anything about that.

Also the case of the collector as "safewealrus" mentions does not seem very practical on board of a vessel.

untill further notice solar panels are still in.

guess I'll have to explain my idea slowly, in big letters :)

first off, I have no association with the company/link I posted. It was just somehting I found that uses the same principle as my idea.

my idea was using optical fibre to run something like a light strip running the full length of the boat, this would bring in nice even light throughout your interior

What about a nice big window? Same effect and if it opens you could get ventilation too! (of course if you opened it in a storm or when it was raining you would also get a bath or shower and eventually sink but that's life).

Conversely buy an open boat and you have none of these problems, until you sink!

I think it's awesome... you would'nt have to turn on the light in a dark place when the sun's up..

Boat Intelligent GPS Navigation and Video Monitor System

Using “Boat intelligent GPS Navigation and Video Monitor System”, you only need to tell the computer where to go, it will automatically drive the boat to the destination, and then wake you up.

Using two high-resolution video camera, every 3 second make a picture at the front pass of the boat, the computer can process the picture within a second, and report the result,

1, Is there any obstruction in front pass,
2, how big is the obstruction,
3, how much obstructions have been found,
3, what the color of the struction,
    4, how far it is,
5, at left or right side of the boat,

Then the computer will make the decision,

    1, alarm,
    2, turn left or right,
    3, top the boat,
    4, wake up the boss.

If you like to do this project, I am the best choice. I am the specialist for image process and video codec.

Oh wow! Then you could send the boat out there to go boating without you and you could stay home and work to make money to pay for it all. Now that's innovation.

back on the original subject matter...

I wonder if it would be possible to have it so that when it is dark outside u have a globe to make the fiber glow, thus giving u 24 hour lighting

anyway, back to my wingsail dreams

    L.E.D.s are simpler.

I bought 40 red L.E.D.s with the resister to use 12V already attached on eBay for about $25.

I intend to scatter red L.E.D.s along the edges of my cabin roof for night lighting.

They can also be installed into existing light fixtures if you want them incognito.
