"Marine Designer" what's that?

Today I received the program for the RINA International Symposium On Marine Design, scheduled for April 12-13th in La Spezia, Italy. Which sounds very nice, I would like to go......buttt!

One of the papers presented is by Dima Ivanov, from Massey University of New Zealand, and titled Education and training for Marine Designers: A Students Perspective. The description, and I quote; "A new profession called the "Marine Designer" is emerging. This particular designer will be able to see a project through from the concept sketch to production, addressing both aesthetics and the mechanics of the design. This will be done by utilizing the benefits of recent advances and working co-operatively with appropriate professionals."

Akkk!!! I am stunned. This amazing "Marine Designer" guy (or girl) sounds a lot like yer average yacht designer, no? And here I though that Yacht Designer was the third oldest profession, after prostitutes and lawyers of course.

What is happening people?

He only talks of "a project" this could be anything from a fish farm to a marker buoy. I just searched their website but no mention of any marine courses so it's probably a case of ..... 'testing the water' !

Hi Mike,

The above was certainly written with tongue in cheek!

I realize this is a student paper and that's to be encouraged. I was not really poking at the university, but rather at RINA.

Is this the best student paper they could come up with? For an international symposium for which I will receive a certificate towards Continuing Professional Development?

It seems a bit much?

Tad
