We are looking to buy our next boat. Its an exciting time. For both my wife and myself. Wife is not a disinterested passenger neither is she referred to as the 'admiral'. My wife is an active sailor in her own right and regularly crews on someone else's boat racing around the cans. She will even do away trips - without me. In short - her opinion about our next boat actually matters. For myself - I like going fast and race an OTB catamaran solo.

Here then - is the rub.

We like completely different kinds of sailing and sailboats. Are there any other forum members who have faced a similar dilemma - what did you do?

I got another one, of course but you have another option - Buy her the boat she wants within whatever constraints you may have, then put in some Saturdays until you can afford your toy. Don't get the order of these steps mixed up.

Otherwise, buy a motorboat. That way you will both be unhappy and can blame the other. This is a bad idea. Don't do it.:D

Lucky for me - the cats I sail are very cheap.

    Keep at it

One way to solve the issue of what boat is to have more than one boat. We resolved our issue by now having three.

A motor boat for the river (camp cruiser).
An old OTB catamaran for racing round the cans at my local lake.
The new boat - is an 18 and a half footer, shoal-draft keel boat, trailerable for sailing down the bay.

The entire fleet cost about $14,000 Australian - most of that was on the new [old] boat.

    I love compromise

Oh - and I kept the old wife too.
