Luxury Trimaran Motor Yacht by University College London I am currently a final year undergraduate at the University College London. The university has been active in the research of trimaran throughout the years. Recently, Mr David Fellows(project supervisor) and I will be working together to carry out a study on the topic of "Luxury Trimaran Motor Yacht". The past research has shown that trimaran has significant advantages and superiorities in certain aspects compared to monohull and catamaran. In fact, trimaran is also known as the intermediate of the two hullforms. The aim of this project is to explore the potential of trimaran hullform and to study how the advantages of trimaran hullform can be optimised in the motor yacht industry as well as to reduce the disadvantage as much as possible. This project would not mean anything if there is no demand for this kind of motor yacht. Therefore a market survey has to be done in order to understand whether the people are ready to invest in a trimaran motor yacht. In this project, a trimaran and a monohull motor yacht will be designed theoretically in order to compare in the aspects that concern the customers, as well as the yacht builders. The White Rabbit trimaran yacht(by North West Bay Ships Australia) will be used to verify the design as a sensible measurement. The project is recently in the 3D-modelling stage using Paramarine design software. A market research has to be done for the different perspectives of the shipbuilder, yacht owners and people in general. This market research will be filed in order to aid the design of trimarans. The design outcome will be posted in this forum again once I have them ready. I would like to include the following questions as part of the market survey: Q1: What is the perception of general people and motor yacht owners about multihull especially trimaran? Q2: What is the preference of potential buyer of the commercialized ships? Q3: How much confidence the shipbuilding industry has in building the trimaran in terms of the design concept? Q4: Is the trimaran design concept in its “matured” phase at the moment? Q5: What are the general issues/problems of a trimaran compared to a monohull? The general dimensions of the Trimaran and a comparable monohull design: Phantom Trimaran Main Hull LBP (m) 60 Beam (m) 6 Draught (m) 3.51 Depth of Hull (m) 6.85 Overall Beam (m) 14 Side Hull LBP (m) 31 Beam (m) 1 Draught (m) 0.5 Depth of Hull (m) 3.84 Total Displacement (tonnes) 589 Top Speed (knots) 21 Installed Engine Power (MW) 3.132 Wet Deck Clearance (m) 3.36 Comparable Monohull Yacht LBP (m) 41 Beam (m) 10 Draught (m) 2.18 Depth of Hull (m) 6.29 Overall Beam (m) 14 Displacement (tonnes) 557 Top Speed (knots) 17.3 Installed Engine Power (MW) 3.132 Pls vote the poll at least after you have read this, thank you!

A very interesting project! What do you mean by trimaran? A stabilised monohull with very small outriggers? All demihulls with identical shape and displacement? Or a central hull having half the total displacement and the other two having 25% each? Those three variants each have some desirable and undesirable hydrodynamic and other features. Best of luck with your studies! Leo.

A trimaran with the side hulls acting as stabilizers Thank you Leo, the trimaran I meant in this project is fitted with the side hulls for stability purposes. I posted this without much clarification first in order to get your first thought about a trimaran motor yacht. This is also meant to obtain a general perception of the people about the trimaran. Thank You!

| Oh... I see you accidentally posted the thread twice... here's my reply from the other one... 1st of all, I think you need to define what sort of size, performance and field of operation you are talking about. The answers for a White Rabbit sized vesel will be vastly different to those of a smaller one __________________

The operating area of the trimaran is limited to calm sea such as Caribbean Sea and Mediterranean Sea with average wave height. Thank You

New-Age Trawler/Motorsailer Hello Eric, welcome to the forums. You might have a look at this posting of mine...somewhat similar project: New Age Trawler/Motorsailer; Kite assisted PowerYacht Following some of the links might offer other interesting material, and maybe do a 'search' on this forum for the word "trimaran". I'll try to participate in your discussion when I can, but at the moment I'm on a self imposed sabbatical from boating subjects.
