Looking for upcoming or established Sailboat Designer

Toronto based TV production is looking for an upcoming or established sailboat designer - naval architect to team up on the project of rebuilding the 35 footer. The rebuild and sailing across the Atlantic is being filmed for Tv series aimed for Discovery Channel.

What exactly are you looking for? Would the prospective NA have the authority to redesign the hull if he deemed it less than seaworthy? Is this a pro bono job? I notice you have not at the moment anyone on the project who knows anything about hull or overall sailboat design. Who designed this boat? Do you have the original drawings and scantlings information?

The original boat is being scraped and we are building the new one, 20% larger, following the lines of the old boat. There are no blueprints etc of the original design. We are looking for the existing modern cruising sailboat design to adapt to the upper-water lines of the original boat. This is a promo-barter deal. We are based in Toronto, Canada.

The TV show is about building the boat and focusing on all aspects of the build and the following maiden cross-Atlantic sail.

We got everything (raw aluminium, the engine and all systems, sails etc) assured and we just need the design and looking for a naval architect to team up.

Wouldn't this be a project that lends itself to collaborating online on this site with input from many people with expertise in special areas? If that were to happen, I would suggest the plans be made available here free online as a tribute to "grandpa".

Whoever does the job will need to be provided with the offsets of the hull and rigging dimensions of the original. Anyone who had this information could easily scale it up 20%. Mostly, the technical part would be to specify the scantlings and rigging details.

This is an intriguing scenario, bound to stimulate a broad viewing audience. The question that comes to my mind is "Is it really grandpa's dream anymore if you scale up the boat 20%?" It seems to me it has become someone else's dream; a more grandiose one.

It also looks to me like grandpa did a very nice job of designing and building the boat.

This is still 'bringing grandpa's dream back to life' and the new project is far from being grandiose. The new boat will be build following the lines of "Julius". The work, man hours and the equipment that goes in building 30ft sailboat is more or less equal to work, m/h and equipment that goes in 34ft. Trust me, Julius' spirit is hovering above the shipyard and after all, this will make for more interesting TV as we will be showcasing every step in building the boat from scratch.

25-30 years ago under 30footers were considered seagoing boats. Today it is a bit more in the 34-36 range.

Since we are featuring a number of equipment sponsors it is better to have a bit bigger hull to accommodate all the gear.

We measured Julius' lines for hydrostatics and found out that she is very simmilar to the lines of Niagara35, Mark Ellis' (of Nonsuch) design.

Today we are meeting with Mark Ellis and will discuss the further options re:using Niagara design and adapting it to Julius' look.
