lobster boat vs carolina convertable - W. Tuna

Hi all,

I'm sure there's endless debate on which boat design is better than another and all designs have strengths and shortcomings.

That said, on the show Wicked Tuna, the Downeast boats don't seem to fair as well in the same (rough bar crossing) conditions. The convertibles plow right through whatever comes.

My inexperience on the subject shows - I thought DE boats were sea-tanks, nearly indestructible in the right hands. I've come away with a very different view. Even the Donelle boat had problems. I was really surprised at how the
whole DE fishing rig performed.

Are these DE boats too small for the condtions?

 

"Lobster Boat" and "Carolina" boat covers a lot of ground.
It is impossible to discuss/compare them on a non-specific basis.
You might be able to stir up some hornets over on downeast boat forums.

 

That TV show is more a drama than a doco, no ?

 

Yes, but that doesn't mean the point isn't valid.

Several cases where the local boats go out and back just fine where the out-of-towners stay home or have trouble.

Looks like the boats designed and built for the local waters do better than the ones that weren't. Go figure.
