I do several hundred miles a year camping and paddling Texas river. Sometimes solo at other times with a partner.
Here is my 2 cents worth ,for extended trips 2 boats have a lot of advantages over a tandem, first it is your own space and believe it or not that gets to be important after a few days . Second it is safer ,you have a back up if something goes wrong , capsize, knocking a hole in the boat plus more storage.
S@G is plenty strong ,I have used ply 4 mm and now I do stripps 6 ounce glass inside and out a 15 ft boat can be built between 40 and 50 lbs no problem
I hammer a boat hard so it will stand up.
Epoxy and graphite on the bottom is a good ideal.

    Thx a lot txriverrat :)

Seems my friend has "chickened out" ... my repetitive assurance that i will build him a good boat didnt work ... guess he will wait till i start mine first then decide if he will proceed!
Thx for every ones great feedback :D much obliged.

A new English word for you, from the French: Portage. This is the act of travelling over land with the canoe when the water is not passable. The best way to do this is to put wheels on the canoe and roll it. Google canoe cart.

    AK,
That is the best short description of canoe characteristics and handling I have ever read. If I hadn't already given you points elsewhere I would have given them to you here.

The same gang of locals would put it on top of your car for you for a small extra fee, I'm sure :)
