| The Junk Blue Book of 1962 This is a great free download of the US Navy compilation of Vietnamese boats in 1962.

| This is where I got the vessels I was posting on one of these threads a few months back. Every time I open the document and just read and look I learn so much. Thanks for sharing the link. |

| I particularly like the basket bottom boats with hoisting rudder and stem 'dagger' board that sail so very fast. The keyhole-slotted stems seen in the haulout pic are what make it work. One has looseness and takes the rudder, the other is tight and takes the sliding stem board. |

| I especially like pages 310-315 with its description of the junk rig and a photo of a one sailing close hauled. Many of the designs in here look like they would be excellent motorsailors. |

| Absolutely. Gentle lines, light displacement, low freeboard, low power. Page 318 shows the sailors required. |

| The low power they need is a good example for an economic passagemaker.

| We can all learn something from these designs because they work very well and there is nothing there that isn't essential, showing how much extra stuff we sometimes load on our boats and consider necessary. |
