john welsford fafnir plywood

does anybody have at least an estimate of how much this plan requires?

 

Well... it is 15' x 5' so I would give a rough estimate at 3 sheets for the hull and another for the seats and misc. I don't know if framing is plywood or lumber, or if it has ply or lumber breasthooks, ply bulkheads for air chambers or even small decks. It could absorb another if a lot of stuff is added. So... rough guess... 4-5 sheets, Probably 3-4 in the 6-9mm range and 1 in the 9-12mm range.

 

I thought Fafnir was 13'?
At least it looks like it on the Welsford site.
Perhaps $30 for study plans would get the designers materials list.

Fafnir has a transom - not double ended. Looks like a blunt bow also.

Actually I scanned thru his sail boats and did not find a 15' boat.

I didn't see the reference to SEI, so this is all I've got.
Do you have a reference?

Guess I mistook Fafnir for SEI... which he is building now. I had just come across it a couple of days ago and when I saw this post, Fafnir being a Scandinavian type name I got confused... not hard for me these days.

compared to the selway fisher micro 10 which requires around 24 pieces of plywood, any estimations?

Talk to the designer.
He had a commentary about the size and the origin of the design.
He was requested to do a 10' boat for solo around the world non-stop, but felt it would require the boat he drew.

i am going to be annoying,,, your in Canada. How about buying a second hand Nordica 16, then putting a plywood box cabin on top. Heaps heaps quicker. In weeks you have your microcruiser, instead of 12 months of building, see 4 weeks, way cheaper too

really nice lines,,, nice boat, fixed keel, double ended, looks safe and solid, three ft longer than fafnir, faster due to increased length.

Here is one, only $2000, took me 30 seconds to find. I cannot say if you want a bit extra ballast to compensate for bigger cruises, I dont think it would need much extra for blue water sailing, add some extra to the keel base to make it stiffer (bolt on some iron)

comparing the two, beam is exactly the same at 6ft 2, Fafnir has a deeper draught by 8 inches. Dont ask me where Whitby Ontario is in relation to you
