I suggest posting a "please help" on crew.org.nz. you might have some luck finding more owners/sailors with the same yachts.

Gidday Philstar1, I too have a Jim Young 7.8 that I am restoring, am down in Blenheim. Am about 1/2 way through restoring the exterior, and the interior is complete.

Unfortunately had a major disaster today, was trying to step the mast so I could start on the topsides when one of the shrouds caught on the edge of the cockpit, I stopped supporting the mast to sort it out while the Admiral had the weight on the pulley and about 10 seconds later the base of the mast blew it's rivets and seperated..... Was highly exciting. I felt ill. The mast base still looks ok on the roof and it looks like the rivets broke cleanly, so I should be able to repair it and try again.

Would appreciate swapping details? Or do you know of other owners?

Roger

I've had this yacht for around 6 months now and after doing a major restoration of her she is now sailing.
We have had her out several times now and every time I sail her I become more impressed with the design.
Ply construction is easy to repair and maintain, the boats are light, easy to launch, retrieve and tow.
Most importantly they sail beautifully and are really safe. We've had ours out in 40 knots with a reef in and she still went to weather fine. I've also laid her over with the spreaders in the water thanks to a snapped kite pole and she had no tendancy to capsize and popped back up without shipping any water once we got the kite under control.

She's certainly not a sportboat greyhound like the young rocket but is major bang for buck and a very nice spacious design.
I'm very happy with performance

Cheers Phil

Hi Dodgy,
My first 6.0 had a bung forward of the centerboard that had to be un-screwed to fill and empty. It was a pain laying in the water to do it, especially in winter. So I made up a sliding valve that slid up and down along side the centerboard case. It was like an aluminum window on edge. But it was just ply with a rubber seal around it for maximum water tightness.

Another way you could go is box out a section in the floor with a lid on it. Through the box you could have a hose and tap, the tap being accessible through the lid, that goes from the side of the keel case (under the water level) to the water compartment. Open the tap when you put the boat in the water from the trailer and close it when you sail, do the same when taking the boat out. I am sure there are other ways to do it without the need for a pump.

Hows the old guy doing? I've not seen him for a couple of years, last time was at an assessment session for my pupils at Massey Uni School of Design, we had a good chat, I'm wondering if he's still drawing and getting the ideas down on paper.

Last time I saw his office, he had drawings of yachts all over the pool table. Last time I spoke with him, he told about a new sports boats design.

Good, he had not seemed to be as well as he might have been. Nice to hear that he's still onto it.

Jim Young Designs Website

We are currently working on the content for the www.jimyoung.co.nz website. Jim is writing his autobiography at present and will be releasing a number of designs online and in print.
The current site is a temporary placeholder.

I am looking to buy plans for what is probably an old Young catamran design. Are you able to help me contact Jim Young?

Catamarans

Jim was discussing the catamaran on Sunday. I am sure he would love to hear about it and can definitely assist with plans.

Vindex 40 - General arrangement plan

I have a Vindex 40 (Jim Young) and am after the general arrangement plan or the shell expansion plan. I need the original thicknesses of the vessel so I can test if the current thickness is ok. Anyone can help?
