Jellyfish swarm cripples Norwegian ferry's engines

http://theforeigner.no/pages/news-in...-norway-ferry/

I would've thought there would be a way of dealing with anything like that, such as seaweed, fishing nets, etc.

What if this happened on lee shore with high winds or something.

In other news, Jellyfish populations set to increase.

Ya..jellyfish rafts. Every now and again I face jelly problems. Normally only affects you if the boat is stationary....the generator cooling system suffers

Its jelly fish season here it would seem. Not the box jelly,-- but they are around and have killed tourists but the longtailed ones that sting.
Man I got a sting off one one day and I could not believe the pain as I looked at my ankle to see ---nothing yet the pain was excruciating,.

I tried Bleach, petrol , deisel, urine , lemon, vinagar and finally the pain started to fade probably not becaue of the chemicals I used but because of the time factor.

You need like I do have a strainer system thay you can rod out without taking water. A simple stand puipe taking the filter above your water line for easy spill free maintenance, and of course no bends in the bit to the sea so it can be rodded.

If you go to sea you just got to have these things.

Doesn't heat neutralize the poison, Frosty ? Swearing helps a lot too, you just have to use the right words. Not oly does it get the jellyfish to make a hasty retreat, the people leave too

Since when does a tough old sailor like you bawl about 'excruciating pain' ? Sounds more like something you expect from a teenager... unless you're in tha stage of old age now... ?

Keel cooling solves the problem.

I bet no one was volunteering to show off and jump into that swarm

of Jellies and be the hero that saves the ship, no matter how many gorgeous blonde Scandinavian girls were watching.

"Yes is does if you like going slow."

One version of keel cooling is to simply use the hull portion in contact with the water as the cooling surface. ZERO loss of speed , and cheaper than purchasing an outside keel cooler on a metal boat.

" skin" cooling works great for refrigeration, AC. its these two units which get clogged with jellies or plastic when at anchor .
