Hull question

I'm looking into buying a pontoon boat with unusual pontoons. These are 24 ft. long ,30 in. wide and 20 in. deep, with a 15 degree vee bottom. They seem very effecient compared to round pontoons.

My question is: Since these pontoons are essentially long narrow boats is there some way to figure what kind of carrying capacity loss and speed loss one would have if they were shortened from 24 ft. to 22 ft.?

Thanks

Reduction in carrying capacity will be 12-14% (assuming the pontoon is made of steel, carrying capcity will reduce from ~735 kg to ~635 KG. (assuming certain shell thickness, freeboard etc.)

Reduction in speed will be very minor / negligible for a slow speed pontoon.

Thank you PNACS.

I think I can live with those numbers, however, this is not a slow speed pontoon boat in the usual sense. Boat can handle a 225 HP I/O or outboard and will run up over 50 MPH, possibly approaching 60. While I understand that is not fast, it is in the pontoon world.

Foiler, you are really concerned with the loss of immersed volume. volume of a hull is (assuming no other data) best integrated from offsets. email me at Tim@Marinedesign.tk if you want me to explain it further.

Tim,

Have tried to e-mail you but get a message that it is undeliverable/unknown address. Happened twice from 2 different sites.

I am interested in what you have to say about this issue. I will have to make a decision on the length in a couple of months, would rather do 22 ft. but will go 24 ft. if that is better.

You can e-mail me at vcgideons@netzero.net

Thanks, Terry
