Hull lines?

I am a mechanical engineering student at the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa). I want to know if anyone can tell me where I could find some information on drawing hull lines. I can visualise a hull shape in my head, but I have absolutely no idea of how to put it on paper (or CAD for that matter). I have good drawing skills (CAD and ordinary), but that's mostly machine drawings.

I would greatly appreciate any recomendations of books/websites or even if someone could just tell me where to start when making a hull lines drawing.

Thank you.

Hi Willie,
Let me suggest that you download free software called
freeship. When you start it up it generates a generic boat hull with movable control points and draws the hull lines for the hull automatically. You can play around moving the control points to your heart's content and you can see the results on your screen. I think it would give you the idea what it's all about better than any written description could. Search for freeship.org on your browser.
Cheers,
Gilbert

Any book on hull design is a good start. I can recommmend Skene's 'Elements of Yacht Design' or a more resent book 'Principals of Yacht design', H. Chapelle's 'Yacht design and Planning'. I'm sure you can find more titles if you search this forum. Good luck

Thanks for your replies! Especially to oceanmaster66. The file you’ve attached REALLY cleared a lot of things up for me.

Thanks again!
