horizontal steering wheel

I have transformed my Hartley 18 trailer sailer into a displacement camp cruiser (see other thread).

The next step is to swap the tiller for a steering wheel but I want to keep everything in the middle of the cockpit. I was thinking about a vertical shaft horizontal steering wheel arrangment (I'm sure I have seen something like I'm describing in a wooden skiff).

Has anyone out there carried out a similar project?

Peter

Brody Knob Steering

Don't know if this is what you are asking, but we set up steering systems all the time "ala bus" or what I call Brody Knob steering.. Not quite horizontal most of the time, but for sure we have done that too..

A couple of pics attached--one of a center console mock-up for a diesel powered Panga we did a few years back..

Hey great idea - I had not thought about making a console.

Have a look at AMAZON dot com . seek teleflex brand hydraulic steering. "Sea star " is the brand name. used on thousands of small runabouts. The control head...pump...and hydraulic push pull arm for the rudder are very space versatile and can often be purchased cheap thru Amazon...

Had a look but seemed a little overpriced and over-engineered for my needs. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Both of my powerboats have horizontal wheels. The only down side I've found is it severely restricts the space left for cup holders. These boats use Teleflex cable system because it was simple and easy to install, but heavy and that big cable does not bend well to a small radius for a small transom.
