Help, newbie here!

Hi all,

I am new to boat design, and im very keen to learn (I have just started a job at a boat builders) and wish to start playing with a few designs of my own.

I was just wondering if anyone could point me in a direction for a few good books on power boat/hull design and engineering?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Try to find a copy of CDR Peter DuCane's book on high speed craft. It's out of print, but you may be able to find a copy, since it was published in the UK.

Also, try to get in contact with the RINA. Their hq is a couple of blocks from Victoria station in London, and they sell lots of books, and material from many symposia. They have one coming up on small craft regs 20-21 Oct 2004, and one on pilot craft, etc. on 17-18 March 2004. www.rina.org.uk

There is also a small book by Frank Bailey called "Small Boat Design for Beginners" (A.H. & A.W. Reed Pty Ltd, 11 Southampton Row, London ISBN 0 589 50203 4) that is a good starting point. It touches lightly on primary points such as linesplans. planing theory, stability, powering, conical development, etc. There is a bit of math involved, but nothing overwhelming. It doesn't have a great depth of information on hull design, but is a very good springboard from which to make the leap into more in-depth treatises.
