JeMorris.

There is a 50 Desco trwaler here in Oregon. She is in great shape, wood hull with a single diesel engine, and more then capable of taking you anywhere in the world you want to go. For about 10K to 20K you can have the boat with enough left over to turn her into your dream boat, as far as the interior gose.

At 6' Draft she will do the loop. Some bridges on the Ill. River might be tricky but she should be ok. Let me post a picture of her.

Its a buyers market and you can likely buy a LOT more then you think, and modify it to suit your needs.

However if you really want to build then by all means build. Get some good plans you like. And come on to the forums and post away about specific questions you have in building her. A lot of really talented people here with a lot of great adivice.

I like the idea of custom plans for less than 400 bucks. At a very reasonable rate of 40 dollars an hour that would be a measly 10 hours. It would be hard to design and draw a full set of plans to build a decent bookshelf in that amount of time let alone a boat.

As we say in the UK, if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys!

Good plans are an education. I've got five sets and learned what not to do.

JEMooris,

What would you consider a fair price for plans for the size boat you want to build?

If the construction cost is not an issue, why is buying plans an issue? Please help me understand your thinking process. As PAR pointed out, $400 plans would only be 1-2% of construction cost. Custom plans professionally designed to your specifications, including the engineering and analysis costs are typically 6 to 20 percent of the total cost for routine designs (thousands of dollars, not hundreds).

When I sit first down with a new client I always ask them what their total construction budget is to better understand if they have a realistic idea of the cost, and how large and complex a project they had in mind. We really can not give you meaningful advice if we do not understand what you had in mind for budget, size and intended use. We had to ask you a lot of questions to get only partial answers, and you still have not told us your intended budget.

There are a lot of experienced designers, builders, naval architects, engineers, and even knowledgeable recreational builders on this forum, many willing to assist you. Some have not been very tolerant of your evasive and incomplete answers to the questions. If you want help, please be more fourth coming with the inquires.

I think most feel that if you are not willing to spend $400 for stock plans, then you are likely willing to cut corners elsewhere. That is not an unreasonable deduction. I and others gave you good, hard learned and experienced information that was not intended to be an attack on you, but only to help you see the reality of what you are asking. And you appeared to ignore our advice.

I and others had reasonably suggested that the least expensive way to get what you want is find an existing boat or someone else's abandon project that is similar to what you want, and then rebuild or modify it to suit your needs. This is far less expensive than building from scratch and you do not even need plans. If your object is to save money by not buying plans, why not save money on labor and materials too by getting an already built boat? What is it that we have misunderstood about your motives?

Either explain your intentions, your budget and your motivations, or do not press the generosity of the design professionals and other helpful people on this forum any more.
