| The helm In my boats when I’m at the helm I usually have a paddle in my hand. I have almost no experience with helms that have a wheel. Are there advantages or disadvantages to having the spokes extended beyond the rim? Is there a rule of thumb for determining the number of spokes and the wheel diameter? Gary ![]() |

| Spokes make it easier to lash the wheel. With modern self steering systems they are more for looks. I don't like them because they they really hurt your hands if the wheel spins.
