hatteras hull history vs. stability and efficiency

For the Hatteras sportsfisher apparently the hull became more efficient in 1983, and later in the 90's it looked even more different without ports. How many changes were there, how much efficiency (at cruising speed) was gained with the changes, and how much stability re: roll was obtained or lost or neither one with the changes? I'm thinking of buying one and I'd like to be a bit more knowledgible.

Also, if a planing or semi-displacement hull is more efficient than the old design at cruise, will it be more efficient at cruising speed, and will it be more efficient that a displacement hull of the same length at hull speed?

Too many factors to consider, almost. I'm glad that I have you experts to give me the information.

thanks, Chris Amsden in Rancho PV, Ca.
