This question could be answered a bit better if you could provide what kind of vessel is under consideration.

I can provide some generalizations:

A boat is generally not a sealed tube so hatches are added to get humans, cargo and air in and out of the hull. Bulkheads are athwartship panels which can provide needed structural support for the hull as well as sometimes serving as simple dividers (like walls). Where bulkheads are located is a question of the design though in sailboats a swell place to have a few is near the chainplates/spars.

Also- ventilation is needed! One of my references states that 10 to 15 CFM should be provided for each person.

I just googled Shanty boat. Is this going to be your design, or from plans? What kind of materials is it going to be made from? Lay it all out for us, give us all the details you have, and lets see what we can come up with!

its my own design,i could only find the plan for 'coolwater' that was relatively on the right lines, but there were no real instructions for it.its a 17' made from wood, planks n ply construction (LOL)with a hull lined with empty milk, juice pop bottles and i think a few oil cans (whew) cos' i know where i can find some,no acetone, nothing thats to on the none-eco side.

Are you going to live on it, and why the containers? Why not plywood hulls?

there will be a hull, but for extra floating,so that if waves come overboard theres less chance of capsizing.yes,i do plan to stay on it but not live on it.

i need to be able to fit 5-7 people MAX SLEEPING.i figured i could get 1 or 2 in the hull without getting the boat over weight (LOL) and five upstairs, and more room avilable for doing other things (like chess or watching the ducks speedly overtake us) well, that is for the remaining lot who arent paddling or steering, but generally it has 3 cabins,1 outside suitable for moderate-high winds,1 inside for moderate to high winds and one under a tent thing for low winds (using the large sail) (so i guess youve figured out the 'power'-sail and oar.and can i ask, whats the difference between a paddle and an oar?
