A very good internet site in french and english (http://www.gitana-team.com/) about the Gitana X and Gitana XI 60 feet racing trimarans. Plenty of information and a lot de very nice pics to download and very worthy to examine for those interested in naval architecture.

To give an idea of the speed of these oceanic racing trimarans Gitana XI has won the speed run of the "Defi Petit Navire" making a run of 9,1 nautic milles in 16 min et 59 s so a average speed of 32,15 knots (37 MPH). That means that this trimaran is able to reach 40 knots.

Gitana has won also the round trip of 18.2 NM in 39’38 so an average speed of about 27.5 knots...this sailing boat, made for open ocean racing is pretty fast!

Yes, going hard is always risky.

Formula One finish in the gravel, motorcycles eject the pilots in hard slides, aerobatic planes may lose a wing, you can fall down running fast in the stairs, your mom may cook an horrible thing trying a new recipe...

But look at the following pics, and you'll see that for sailing this tris you need guts and hability...

For those afraid by risk, the best sport is couch-potatoes.

Francis Joyon, 47 years old, achieves the 03/02/2004 his solo circumnavigation on the Trimaran Idec (27.5 meters long, 79 feet) in 72 days 22 hours 54 mn 22 sec.

Francis is known for his titanium hard mental strength.

The world record is set so high that I think it won't be broken in a long time.

Does someone feel he is able to sail alone a 79 feet tri in the screaming sixties? I won't try, I hate cold water and chilling 60 knots winds.
