George Sutton Designs?

Has ANYONE heard of a boat designer named George Sutton? If so, where is/was he from? Is there a catalog of his work somewhere? There is a 48' Sutton designed steel ketch that I am interested in buying, but I can't seem to find any information on the designs or construction. It was purportedly built by "John Cook, Shipwright", another name I can't seem to track down anywhere. Can someone please help shed some light on these people?

George WM. Sutton was a steel boat builder and designer for many years pre interweb. As of 1986 I have an address in St. Augustine, Florida. He built many boats, and in later years mostly his own designs. A builder by the name of Dennis Schreiber (also in St Augustine) built stock round bottom steel Sutton sailing vessels.

No info on Cook.

George Sutton built boats in Palm Coast, FL and lived in Flagler Beach. He died about 15 years ago. Do you have any more particulars on the 48'er? I have some of his drawings and may be able to able to help you.

I'm no longer looking at the boat. Actually, I WAS really interested in it, but the lack of info really had me concerned. Anyway, some guy from Wyoming bought the boat. Here's the broker's page... they listed the boat as a 44' Sutton, but it was actually 48 LOD. If you have info on the boat, I'm sure that Bob Brokaw would be happy to send it to the new owner.

I own a 62' Sutton steel schooner built in 1968. I am looking for any info on George W. Sutton who designed and built this vessel in Tarpon Springs, FL, especially any plans for this vessel. I recently sailed to Tarpon Springs in the vessel and was fortunate to meet Earnest Duckworth owner of Duckworth Steel Boatworks. Junior (as he is still known) was one of the builders of this vessel.
Junior told me he didn't know of any plans in existence. but remembers building my boat because it has 3 portholes in the transom. Prior to my ownership the vessel suffered a fire in the galley area and most of the woodwork was lost in this area. I am rebuilding this vessel presently and hope to restore her to her original configuration. BTW anyone have a source for large opening portholes? 10"-24". I check local consignment shops in my area but restaurants seem to snap these things up faster than I can find them!

Certainly am interested, I assume you are talking fees for service interested? Prior to you doing anything feeable it would be good to find out if you actually had any plans for the 62'

I would only asking for the postage and the cost of copying whatever drawing I find. Are the ports in the transom set into a tombstone shaped frame?

Yes, exactly so. Vessel may have been originally been named Atlantean. This appears on the abstract of title I received from the Documentation Office. I am the 7th owner. When George sold the boat to a St. Louis lawyer it was renamed "Good Jump II". The new owner then sailed it to Spain and refitted it to his liking. According to this owner (I spoke to him) the boat was pretty basically fitted out, fuzzy carpet everywhere ala 1960's era. We just refitted the seachest with all new fittings, the originals were all of British Pipe Standard Threads, or to us Metric, quite a bit more work to it than we anticipated!
