Mack Horton in Melbourne has sent a link to a video of his double Hobie Mirage drive powered boat Strider beetling around Victoria Harbour. What I really like about this is that he is peddling round the backs of pontoons and under gangways along strips of water too narrow to row. It looks like great fun. Look out for the admiring glances of onlookers!

    So...you paddle and it moves...barely.

    What did I miss?

The missed part was how the paddles were operated but don't worry too much, a little refinement will change things.

Got my new stiffened paddles Today: 50 cloudy with scattered rain and windy. Frostbite alert !!

Awesome power transfer although not a "true" flapping motion. I have rowed a dinghy, paddled canoes and kayaks, and other contraptions... this setup is simply simple !! Get ready for fun this summer... Water buggin'

I want to do this on somewhat larger boat, without crossing the oars. Dory or mini-viking ship, or stylized fish/bird junk.

Makes some sense that no energy would be wasted cycling the oars out of the water, splashing, etc

Big props are more efficient that fast spinning egg beaters, so big flippers should be good.

Always wanted to put a side-to-side leg driven tail based on existing rudder/foot steering applications on a kayak for hands free maneuvering, especially in shallows.

Then there is the Penguin's sub from the first Batman movie http://wac.450f.edgecastcdn.net/80450F/comicsalliance.com/files/2011/10/batman22.jpg

    Description...

Skijeboo as an aid to paddle-boarders. This innovation will allow participants to enjoy the sport by giving them a paddle which requires less inherent skill and which is easier to learn than conventional apparatus.

Conventional paddles requires the operator to 'lift and drive' through the water. This action relies on a certain degree of skill and balance of achieve a smooth momentum through the water it intends to create a paddle that has a number of live 'fins' that sequentially 'fold and unfold' as the pole moves backward and forward in the water. As the fins fold 'open' drive is transmitted to the craft because of the drag caused. As the pole moves forward the fins 'fold' and minimise their resistance during that stroke. The overall effect is to produce a paddle that is simply 'pushed and pulled' in an action that is very similar to a 'poled' watercraft. The user requires less skill in balancing or in learning the inherently testing skill of paddling whilst upright.

The device may take the form of a pole attached to a float. The precise physical configuration is to be defined after exploration in the initial stages of the project.

WaterBlade is a motorized water board that simulates the feeling of walking on water. Great work out for Legs,

It worked well to me with one oar in the lee side (19 feet light planing hull) if windy. The shape must be assymetrical for better efficiency. I just cut in diagonal a piece of timber and bring an airfol shape. Easy to do and with the same timber you can do two oars. I was inspired in figure 5 of this link. http://councill.home.mindspring.com/sbjournal/sculling/scull3.html

I wonder if anyone has bolted a propeller to one end of those logs they try to run on?

    It gets worse:

    Waterblade dog attachment available:

I think the dog is actually a glove puppet.

I honestly don't get this, unless its a pisstake. What's with the 'walking' action with this anyway? I'd be more convinced if you just stood on the thing like a big div and tried to look dynamic while the torqeedo drags you along at half a knot if you're lucky.
