Displacement Question

I tried to attach the lines drawing of the boat I designed that I did on Freeship. Tell me what you think if it is there.

Minor point of information ...DelftShip's free version does let you load an image, scale it, position it to an appropriate origin, etcetera. In fact, the second exercise in their tutorial has you doing exactly this. So ...yes, Delft lets you do what you say FREEship can do (I've never tried FREEship and just tried DelftShip today.) I would think that if a fellow were going to buy Delft later that he'd be well off to at least try it and compare it to FREEship (or other software) sooner rather than later. Maybe the free version(s) may be all that he/she needs. And I'd be curious to hear the results of the comparison.

Reason being there is some thing useful in FREEship for you.
You can scan your drawings and set them as background in FREEship.
Creating a CAD version of your boat is a matter of copying the background image. Sort of like tracing. This feature is turned off in the free version of Delft.

I am encouraged that you picked up a pencil to start your career.

I agree with Raggi on the simple accuracy of Simpson’s Rule as explained in Principles of Yacht Design. It’s a time-honored method.

As for “normal displacement for a fifty foot high performance cruising yacht”, how long is a piece of string? I would suggest keeping a database of the specifications for similar sized yachts to the one you are designing. Here you can compare a myriad of factors such as displacement/length ratios, sail areas etc. between your design and “what’s also out there”.

Bearing in mind that all yachts are just variations on a theme, I believe you must be able to define (and justify) how your design differs from something similar, and why.

Concur with Rayk, also I think the deadrise is too flat for good open water work. Also she will have a tendency to go bow down, fine the WL or up the flare fwd.

I've been revising the boat further and further. I think I have a pretty good handle on the program now. I also added a deck and cabin using the different layers.
