I can go to court myself and seek civil damages from issues in my realm of expertise and win, without an attorney. I would not dream of defending myself in a murder case. You gotta know your limitations.

As to boat building, some people with skills can build almost anything they can see. I'm not that guy, but I can build a canoe with a plie of materials, tools and without plans. Not saying it would win any awards or be the fastest paddle craft ever to hit the water, but it would work! On the other hand, I would not attempt to build a 16' sharpie without plans, if I had to, I probably could, but it may not end up being a sharpie!

Besides the Ark, many have built boats with little more than general ideas and they worked. Trial and error, but today, that method could be very expensive. Not only that, you could easily be shark bait.

So I would think it depends on the boat, your skills and common sence in knowing your limitations!
