| Design Question Hello, I am new to boat design and to this forum, and thought this would be a good place to learn. I am in the process of designing a boat that is ocean-going, can sustain itself for several days and can also do beach landings... I am not sure or not, but if the boat will be doing beach landings does that mean it cannot have a keel.. or a very effective one? What shape would the hull have to be? Any other help would be appreciated... Thanks...

| So far I'm afraid I don't have enough information to comment. Are we talking about a sailboat? motor yacht? landing craft? monohull or multi? what size? For cruising across oceans? With how many people as crew? |

| Hi Dusteater Any boat can do beach landings its just a question of how much damage can you accept. Most alloy boats endue and hide the hull damage better than a glass boat. If you chose a boat with a high degree of vee in the boat which suits ocean work they don,t look to pretty laying on one side on the beach. They are also harder to beach properly due to the extra draft. There is simply no perfect boat for all occasions. The only way I could cope with the decissions on what type to make is try to figure out where you will use the boat (most) of the time and target that best design. Keeping in mind the things we dream we are going to do letting them have a influence on our design. Cheers Graham.

| You might want to check out the designs of Nils Lucander. Some are designed with two skegs so they'll ground out on 3 points. related links: http://www.naval-architects.org/page/newsart3 http://www.cheoyleeassociation.com/a_models_text.htm |
