Design ideas - What makes a good boat and what makes a bad boat?

Hi All,

I'm interested in design aspects of GRP boats up to about 21'. These include inboard and outboard boats for ski and wake boarding as well as sea going boats used for recreational fishing and diving (CC, WA, Cuddy Cabin etc.).

I'm not looking for anything in particular, just ideas people have seen or used and like or dislike for whatever reason. It can be ideas for the end user, for manufacturing reasons, for repare reasons, cosmetics or any other aspect you care to think of.

I know this is an extremely broad question but I'm interested in all range of answers. Feel free to add photos, links etc.

First, you have to either have at least two boats or eliminate either wakeboarding or general recreational use from the list. A wakeboarding boat is an extremely inefficient boat in terms of power required and fuel use. Some bad old deep V's are pretty good at this.

If you are interested in economy of operation, the boat will be poor at making waves.

what I'm trying to acheive here is more in the area of building a knowledge base for design reference. I'm not trying to get ideas for one specific style of boat, more just throwing some ideas around to establish some concept and mehodology benchmarks, so anything relevent to whatever style of GRP boat is up for discussion. Much of what skilled designers apply to their designs comes from experience gained over time, much if which is not published or available to the general public.
