While googling for Colin Archer plans, I found a reference on here from jonnyb which I wanted to follow up, but his pm address seems no longer to be valid. Any information regarding him, or Colin Archer plans gratefully received. Thanks.

On "Atkins Boatplans" are some Colin Archer derivates if I recall right.

Check out John Leathers "Colin Archer and the Seaworthy double ender" ISBN 0-9524679-6-8.

Lots of lines plans and historys of Colin Archer's designs.

WOW - that's a lot of welding!!!! I also built a real Colin Archer once in the dim distant past, from a prefabricated kit made by De Groot:

very nice model you have there :-) Why not build in 1:1, then you can sail it to the end of the world

a real Colin Archer was built to his plans, I doubt this one is!
And 1/3 finished seems a bit optimistic?

Colin archer could also offer lapstrake if customer was willing to pay more. His first ones was in lapstrake before he started to use carvel.
Well, he had not access to alloy but thats not his fault :-) If he has been alive today he will for sure consider this as an option. (at least when oak is hard to get by)

This raises a good question. Is it a replica or in the style of. In the Uk there is a trend for building new "Pilot Cutters" of which most if not all have never carried a pilot. The same in Norway, there are a lot of boats termed a "Colin Archer" but in fact there are very few which left Colin Archers drawing board or yard.

I think this requires a new thread.

The problem with Mr colin archer, he trusted his foremen (or yard) so he only provided the drawings. detailed buildingconstruction does not exist. so basically as long as you follow his drawings i think you are pretty close to what this boat will have been like 100 years ago, but ofcourse alloy was not an option 100 years ago. Well seasoned oak-knee or massive amount of oak is not an option today

I appreciate that Colin Archer passed his drawings down to the yard and it was up to the shipwrights discretion to get the drawings "to work".

Alloy maybe a much more suitable material for your purpose, and properly grown oak wood at the prices per cube + shipwrights might make it "not an option" for the budget but, I am asking what is a replica?

I won't name her for the sake of the owner but I worked on a boat which was meticulously rebuilt from the keel up to the yards drawings and pictures and accounts, even the brass name plate on the tiller head has been remade as it were circa 1902, but, the only thing left of the old boat is a small section of keel. When she was "relaunched" the old boys at the dock said she wasn't the same boat and and now was a yacht! Is she a replica?
