clinker launch restoration

Hi although I have been a member of the forum for a long time, I have not used it , been to busy boating. However the time has come for me to see what I can learn after my 50 years on the river. I have recently bought a mahogany clinker launch, the ribs are oak I think, and the engine a 9hp lombardini diesel. The full outfit is in really good condition and has excellent performance, however now in my 60s i want to put it into concours condition . so i will be removing the thwarts, engine and other parts, and then stripping all the varnish off ready for inspection. I have only possessed one clinker boat before and that one i was given at the age of 14, so i will be asking for advice on varnish stripping, varnishing to a high standard, copper nailing/roves and the like. Any advice would be well appreciated. regards to all andy

Hi Gonzo. I live in Anlaby just outside hull in the east riding 1/2 mile from the humber bridge, I bought my launch from down your way downton near salisbury and the launch was built on the south coast, i think there is a nameplate on it but cannot remember the yard but will post it with photos, as i am away on saturday for a week it will be in about 10 days time. regards andy

cheers for that Gonzo, may have to call on you because as i said i have no experience with clinker build, however i have found out thr builders of my launch it was built by lychette bay boatyard , poole, now gone of course. but i have traced the ex owners of the yard and they are going to put me in touch with the two boatbuilders who actually built my boat. So i am on the right track on finding out the history of the launch.
