ah yes
the pilot station has exactly that set up but with an adjustable seat on top but the salon seat I have oposite should also

I've made the trip both up the mainland and direct from Cape Scott.Depends on weather. I've had no reason to go to Alaska. People who do simply find the same kind of coast , greater distances, worse weather and more people, as well as having to deal with entering a foreign country with a far greater presence of big brother.
Some go up the inner channels ,which are as boring as watching paint dry and a long way between anchorages.The outer channels are far more interesting with far more islands and anchorages . From Hakai Pass to Seaforth channel are roughly 811 islands, an average of 23 islands per mile and almost as many hurricane proof anchorages. Fantastic cruising ground. I only go to Haida Gwai for the venison.
To go to Haida Gwai, you have several options , direct from Bull Harbour, an overnight trip,or from Seaforth Channlel , 90 mile overnight trip,or from Trutch island, 70 miles easy daylight trip in the long summer nights ,or from Larson Harbour , 50 miles, easily made in daylight with much daylight left over on the other side.
I've also cruised the west coast of Vancouver Island . Too easy for too many people to get to, so nowhere as unspoiled as the north coast. Too many people.
The south coast is populated , but great swimming in summer.

Walk through the marinas of the world, you will notice most owners let the jobs do by service personnel, even changing the lightbulbs, let alone rigging.

Those of us who buy used equipment, and continue to use it to the end of its useful life, do a lot to ameliorate the horrendous environmental damage caused by the wanton, irresponsible and arrogant squandering of our finite resources, by those who so arrogantly and irresponsibly, buy only new equipment and throw it out , long before its useful life is anywhere near it's end.
Don't expect any of us to buy any of your sanctimonius guilt trips over our not being as environmentally irresponsible and arrogant as the rich.
If I won millions in the lottery tomorrow , I'd still buy used sails and equipment , and spend the money on transition houses, food banks, homeless shelters and environmental protection.
Then maybe I wouldn't need an armed guard at my gate.

Loved that picture of Phillipe Jeantot in his round the world racer, asleep in his lazy boy, in his plexi wheelhouse.
I'm embarrassed that it took me so long to clue into the foolishness of outside only steering stations.

ya I've worked outside for many years and find a specific value in a having a roof over my head and some shady place to relax

a nice wheelhouse with lots of windows and an operable skylight is perfect if you ask me specially if you include a nice shade into that skylight for those a little to sunny days

oh hey
I got em on the ropes again over on the climate thread over this biz about measured residency time of co2
seems some few deniers were insisting that the data said one thing and now its been shown that it actually said something completely different and precisely in line with what myself and a few others have been saying all along
its kinda funny to watch all the worming and squirming some folks will go through to avoid admitting when there are wrong about something

anyway back to the sail vs motor question

if I do end up in a sailor I'd feel better knowing how to repair and even make my own sails
Im kinda the independent type and prefer to just do things myself

A big roll of peel and stick 3 inch wide sail repair tape makes sail repairs on the spot easy. Stuff welds itself on, eventually.
I think it was Napoleon who said "It takes a greater man to admit a mistake, than to lead an army into battle."
I find the former easier.

not sure how comfortable I'd be with just tape, I have this insane need for things I build to be as perfect as I can make them, for me its the fun part.

You can easily sew thru the tape at the first good opportunity. It's just sail cloth with goop on it.

Found one of the cheapiest ones

Have a look at the site of dutchthruster group. There you`ll see the difference between a sail or a motor. Especially for the longer distance. The company is specialised in bow thrusters, but also has a great deal of knowlidge about boats.
