chaning hull color

I was wondering if anyone hear could help me out....

I would like to change the hull color on my 15' jet boat from the factory white gel-coat to a silver.....

Can I paint the hull a few inches above the waterline with automotive basecoat/clearcoat paint? I am guessing the anwser is yes but would like to find out what others think?

thanks
