ah, you have a darling in toe...check.

yup, a cat will work just fine. come to think of it suggest a really big cat with...say...uhhhh....bilge with headroom that's creepy looking and smells awful, refrigerator, tv, comfortable lounge chair, workbench...that sort of thing if you can get stick one in there somehow. eventually you'll be spending a lot of time down there.
