Canal workboats design

An interesting design for low wash bows on a canal barge has been around for some time, that is the extreme bow is a simple 500mm diameter vertical cylinder ,this is said to be highly efficient in shallow water. These boats are 2 metres wide, and 23m long. Has any one seen this idea in practice ?
