I've been waiting for this thread to resurface. This fellow dropped anchor near me in Cocoa Florida. He said he was sailing it around the world. In case you're wondering, he describes himself as an artist. Oh- and there's a website- earthballs.org.

Oculus 104 muutti vesillä liikkumisen ja olemisen toiselle aikakaudelle, sillä se suunniteltiin alusta alkaen uudelleen lähtemällä ihmisen perustoiminnoista veneessä. Se suunniteltiin toimimaan kaikissa tilanteissa mahdollisimman miellyttävästi ja turvallisesti.

Oculus 104 merkitsee maksimitilavuutta ja uudenlaista merimukavuutta: voit nukkua, aterioida, hoitaa itseäsi ja oleskella todella mukavasti, sillä kokoonsa nähden Oculus on markkinoiden tilavin matkavene. Lapsilla on tilaa leikkiä ja liikkua turvallisesti sisällä ja kannella. Suuret ikkunat antavat sisäoleskelutilalle avaruutta ja luonnon läheisyyttä.

Oculuksen meriominaisuudet ovat osoittautuneet erinomaisiksi. Rungon uudentyyppinen muotoilu ja sivuvakaajat tasoittavat meritien miellyttäväksi. Kansirakenne muodostaa yhtenäisen, sisätiloja peittävän vaipan ja samalla turvallisen aurinkotason.

Helsingin venenäyttelyn vetonaula oli eittämättä turkulaisen Kai Salon muotoilema ja Ky Antti Ilolan valmistama asuntoalus Oculus 104. Erikoisuudellaan tavoitti Oculus näyttely-yleisön suosion ja herätti venealan toimittajissa sekalaisia tunteita. Veneen meriominaisuudet voitaneen kuitenkin jättää kevään koeajojen jälkeen ruodittaviksi ja lähestyä Oculusta toistaiseksi perinteitä rikkovana avaruusajan venemodulina.

Ajatusta Oculuksessa on ilman muuta runsaasti. Tuskin mikään saman kokoluokan vene tarjoaa yhtä avarat ja viihtyisät sisätilat kuin Oculus. Ulko-oleskelutilaksi on ajateltu koko veneen mittaisen kajuutan katto ja kieltämättä onkin siellä tilaa ruskettua, mikäli vain oikukas suomalainen kesäsää sen sallii. Tuulensuojaa ei kannelta löydy ensinkään, joka estänee enemmät auringonotot veneen kulkiessa.

Sisälle veneeseen päästään kupolimaisen ohjaamon takana olevia jyrkkiä portaita laskeutumalla. Sisustus on paras osa Oculuksesta. Tilaa on vaikka paremmillekin coctail-kutsuille. Muovipinnat eivät tunnu tässä veneessä häiritseviltä, sohvamaiset istuimet molemmilla laidoilla ovat miellyttävän upottavat ja värikkäällä sametilla päällystetyt, näiden välissä pöytä (alla konekoppa), jonka ympärillä rupattelee ja nauttii antimia hyvin kahdeksankin henkeä. Rullaverhoilla peitettävät makuutilat ovat ruhtinaalisen suuret ja kahdessa kerroksessa. Muotoilija tuntuukin olevan joko vallan vimmattu ”kujertelija” tahi innokas ryhmäseksin harrastaja, sillä yhteen ”makuulokeroon” mahtuu erinomaisesti nukkuman kaksikin paria. Tilavat komerot makuutilojen molemmilla puolilla peittävät työvaatteet party-vieraiden katseilta. Keittiö on jokseenkin ahdas, salongin ja kylpyhuoneen välisessä käytävässä, mutta vastaa varustukseltaan jääkaappeineen ja grilleineen hyvinkin nykyaikaisen kaupunkiosakkeen vaatimustasoa. Kylpyhuone vai pitäisikö sanoa suihkuhuone on suurin, mitä tämän kokoluokan veneissä on tavattu. Suihkuallas on peitetty irrallisella turkkiin liittyvällä levyllä, WC on varustettu hajoittajalla, joka päästää jätteet veteen bakteerivapaina. Tässä osassa on myös säilytystilaa enemmän kuin missään tavanomaisessa kylpyhuoneessa.

Oculuksen ohjaamo muistuttaa lievästi lentokoneen tai ”avaruusaluksen” ohjaamoa. Kupolimainen kokomuovinen katto takaa näkyvyyden kaikkiin suuntiin, mutta takaa samalla myös voimakkaan hikoilun aurinkoisena päivänä. Yksin ei ohjaajan kuitenkaan tarvitse ”moduulissaan” istua, vaan istuin löytyy vielä navigaattorillekin.

Oculuksessa on vielä joitakin ”erehdyksiä”, jotka valmistajan mukaan korjataan seuraavassa veneessä. Tällainen on mm. salongin ikkunaratkaisu, joka nykyisellään tuskin kestää kovaa merenkäyntiä.

Oculus 104 prototyyppi oli näyttelyn ylivoimaisesti katsotuin, kuvatuin ja kiistellyin vene. Sisätilojen käytöltään se on erinomainen, ulkonäöstä voi olla montaa mieltä. Vanhoillismielisestä venekansasta yllättävän moni kuitenkin hyväksyi sen. Vasta vedessä nähdään lopullisesti sen käyttökelpoisuus, protyyppiasteen huomioiden on tässä vaiheessa turha puuttua yksityiskohtasuunnittelun puutteisiin, sillä valmistajalla oli jo nyt valmiina parikymmentä kohtaa käsittävä parannuslista.

Muotoilusta vetonaula

Asuntovene on astunut uusille linjoille. Venenäyttelyssä esitellään Oculus-vene, joka on suunniteltu ja rakennettu sekä purjehtimaan että antamaan tilaa mukavaan oleskeluun.

Veneen runko on kalastajanmallinen ja 10,4 metriä pitkä. Muotoilu on kuitenkin niin rohkea, että perinteellisiä linjoja on mahdoton havaita. Vene on rakennettu puhtaasti vientiä silmällä pitäen. Sen pienoimalli on ollut esillä venenäyttelyissä sekä Saksassa että Englannissa ja herätti suurta huomiota. Nyt se on täydessä mitassaan nähtävänä ensimmäistä kertaa.

Oculuksen isät muotoilija Kai Salo ja KY Antti Ilola ovat yhteistyössä lähteneet uusille linjoille lähinnä sisätilojen lisääminen mielessään. Yhdistelmää etuhytti, ohjaamo, takahytti ei esiinny, vaan koko vene on katettu. Veneen keulaan on sijoitettu WC ja keittiö. Pyöreä ohjaamo kuuluu samaan keulakokonaisuuteen. Salonki on viisi metriä pitkä. Perällä on vaihtoehtoisesti protyyppin tapaan lepotasot tai erillinen hytti.

Tilavuus ei rajoitu ainoastaan sisällä vaan koko kansi on käyttötila. Säilytystilat ovat melkoiset. Niihin kuuluu mm. tuuletettu sadevaatekomero, hyllykaapit, ripustinkaapit, kylkiin upotetut liinavaatekomerot, pilssin virvoke- ja säilykeruokakomero ja keittiön kaapit. Ohjaus on hydraulinen, varusteisiin kuuluu mm. lämmityslaite, säädettävä koneellinen tuuletus, automaattiset pilssi- ja likavesipumput, kylmä- ja lämmin painevesi sekä stereonauhurilaitteet. Koneena on prototyypissä 75 hv:n Valmet, jolla lasketaan saatavan kymmenen solmun nopeus.

Oculus kulkee yhä tukevasti

Ensiesittelyssä Oculus 104 herätti huomiota ja mielenkiintoa uudentyylisellä ja epätavanomaisella suunnittelullaan. Käytännössä sen ratkaisut ja meriominaisuudet ovat osoittautuneet hyviksi. Uudentyyppinen runko ja sivuvakaajat tasoittavat meritien miellyttäväksi. Rungon vedenalaisen osan suunnittelussa on käytetty hyväksi perinteisiä, käyttökelpoisiksi ja varmoiksi havaittuja linjoja uusien ideoiden ohella. Oculuksen suljetun rakennekonstruktion periaatteita käytetään myös joissakin pelastusvenetyypeissä – turvallista – se voi kierähtää vaikkapa ympäri uppoamatta. Suuret, vesitiiviit ikkunat veneen sivuilla täyttävät Lloyd’in rekisterinormien vaatimukset.

Oculus 104:n prototyyppi selviytyi hyvin ylittäessään Pohjanmeren kahdeksan beaufortin myrskyssä neitsytmatkallaan.

Ohjaamosta avautuvat hyvät näköalat kaikkiin suuntiin. Liiallista auringonpaistetta estämässä on kuvun sisäpuolella toimiva erityinen auringonsuoja. Hallintalaitteet ovat ergonometrisesti sijoitetut. Ulosvedettävien karttatasojen lisäksi ohjaamossa on tilaa myös karttarullille.

Epätavallinen kansiratkaisu antaa käytettäväksi juhlavan kokoisen aurinkokannen, joka voidaan suojata tuulelta sivukaiteisiin kiinnitettävillä markeeseilla. Oculuksen takapäässä on ainutlaatuinen laskuhissi, joka helpottaa veneeseen pääsyä ja siitä poistumista ankkurissa oltaessa ja muutenkin. Se toimii samalla jollan säilytystelineenä ja sen korkeus on portaattomasti säädettävissä kansitasolta aina merenpintaan saakka.

Oculus 104 matkaveneen valmistus loppui vuonna 1972 öljykriisiin, mikä vaikutti mm. lujitemuovin
hinnan nousuun n.20%. Tilanne muutti täysin elinkeinoelämän ja teollisuuden toiveet ja suunnitelmat koko maailmassa. Kiinnostus venettä kohtaan kuitenkin jatkui vielä monia vuosia.
Tiedusteluja tuli kolmen ensimmäisen vuoden aikana noin 2700 ja joitakin vielä 10 vuoden jälkeenkin.
Lisenssineuvotteluja käytiin kuuden eri tahon kanssa.
