| Well, it's a private lake (more of pond, too small to call a lake) so there won't be any neighbors... thanks for the heads up though. Burn permit has been filed already too I think. Now, you say steel will be too hot to handle, that's fine with us. Will it stay intact though? also, We'll have it attached to a wooden support that theoretically will be underwater... Will the support burst into flames from the conduction? and the gunpowder was just for my own personal entertainment... and maybe a very small amount in the head... Thanks for the tire-anchor idea too... That sounds a lot better actually... |

| Wood alone can't burn hot enough to have a significant effect on structural-grade steel unless the steel is loaded to very near its yield stress. I doubt you have much to worry about there. It'll just be really damned hot for a few hours. Anything underwater will be cooled by the lake and will not conduct significant heat out from the fire. Heat transfer by radiation is the concern here, hence Ted's earlier suggestion of using scrap metal roofing as heat shields.

| oh... our "steel" is an old 7-8ft mesh satelite dish... this may be a problem.... We're going to be building a wooden support above this, and more or less attach the wood to be burnt onto that by wire (chicken or otherwise)... the dish was to catch pieces as they burnt off... Eventually, all the wood will come down onto the dish and burn out there... We're going to put the scrap sheets of metal directly beneath the fire, but that will be placed directly on top of the mesh... |

| Just Thought I'd come by and tell everyone... The effigy was canceled.... *tear* Yeah, whoever said it up there was right, there is a severe drought here in GA, so the locals got together at the last minute and vetoed it.... So no effigy, no bonfire... just a giant capture the flag game (supposedly) and powder-puff football. So, that means, no pictures and no plans coming to fruition... >.< oh well... Thanks for all the help you guys gave during the planning steps though. I send you all a big hug... and a cookie! |
