Average global wind direction and speed + optimum Cp

I am currently working on an around the world cruising yacht. I have a couple of questions.

1. Are there any good sources for average global wind speed and direction for the past say 10 or so years?

2. I know say vovlo 60's have a higher Cp because they are designed for higher speeds. Therefore if i am designing an around the world yacht it would make sence to design for off the wind performance rather than up wind performance?
Therefore I am looking at polar plots for parametricly similar yachts to gain an idea of target speeds to work out an optimum Cp. Have i got the right end of the stick here?
