Skiff vs. Dingy

Just from watching TV, I got the impression that a skiff and dingy could come in various sizes and shapes, but a dingy was designed with an intention that it could be carried on a yacht. A skiff designer had no such intention. This probably has no relevance in the racing world, but would others make such a distinction?

How does a scow fit in to the clasification?
Again from TV, a scow is similar to a skiff. The scow has orgins in fishing where the skiff design did not consider needs of fishing at all.

Does intended usaages have a historical relevance in the classification?
