| Ashbana, First of all, you need a boat design, either from a designer or from a shipyard. There are dozens of them about, particularly along the Gulf coast of the US and in the Pacific Northwest including Washington and British Columbia. An associate of mine, John Marples of Marples Marine here in St. Augustine, and I have completed a preliminary design for a 79' aluminum catamaran motoryacht for a client that would like to use it for sportfishing. We have been talking with Newcastle Marine just south of here in Palm Coast to be the builder. They are joining companies with Keith Marine in Palatka, FL, to expand operations. Both yards are experienced in aluminum construction. Another shipyard that I have done work in and like is Custom Steel Boats in Merritt, North Carolina. They have just completed the first of some aluminum barges that will be used for houseboats. They have built some of my steel and aluminum motoryachts and so are well experienced in aluminum construction. The first and most important thing to keep in mind is cost and budget. Establish a realistic budget for the design and construction, make sure you oversee the construction regularly, either by yourself or with a hired consultant whom you trust. The primary reasons that boat projects fail is because of unrealistic expectations about cost and poor construction management. Those are some starting points. Eric

| first of all,for commercial fishing boats ,a cat is out ,it wont take the weather you will need to fish in ,or get caught in. what are your payload requierments?,fuel range and what geographical location ,do you wish to fish in ?and if it is to be used as a fishing boat ,,it should be desighned as a fishing boat ,,not a conversion from something else.longliner |

Maybe the boat is being operated in predominatly fair weather areas. Also plenty of commercial open water passenger, fishing catamarans are around that seem to work just fine. Dave . |

| catmando2,,you cant always fish in nice smooth glass,,you get caught in hurricans ,,cyclons and noreasters, and blue northerns,I have never seen a cat commercial boat ,but I dont know it all,,,but I know cats turn over in rough seas and dont recover ,,not to say it dont happen to monos ,,but as far as rough weather fishing goes ,,I stand by 15 years of expierance,,,,didnt see no cats,,,and if this guy is serious about making a living from these boats ,,he has got to come to relize that extreme weather is going to happen ,,he wont be able to pick and choose his weather,,,,,,,,,,,longlining tuna and swordfish is something I know a little about,,,,longliner |

| also it sound like he has much to research,,you cannot commercial or charter fish a boat in USA,if it is not built here ,,and since he gives a USA address he can probably buy used longline boats all day long here,or coastguard confiscated boats,, |

Gee when was the last time you saw or heard of a power cat of any size turn over? I sure you understand that mono's when rolled can fill up with water and sink. Having been in both Mono and Multi in heavy weather, I know where I would rather be, possibly upside down and floating. As for stability in the rough have a look at the article I have supplied from Loch Crowthers design notes [ the first couple of paragraphs ] Here are some builders of large comercial cat's that are good enough for the US military, so I would assume good enough for a fisherman. http://www.incat.com.au/news/delivery_archive.cgi There are plenty more if you care to be informed and look. I thought that people had got over their phobia on using catamarans in commercial application's. They certainly have down here, using them since the 1970's as recue craft and ferries in areas that are too rough for the monohull's. Why do I feel like I've taken the bait ??? Dave |
