8' Puddle Duck, 12' Puddle Goose...10' Eider Duck? [... Eider duck: Largest duck species in North America...] Think it'll fly? ![]() Shown with 16" sides, 4.8" draft at 600 lb displacement(fresh), same 4' beam, same 6" rocker evenly stretched by 2 ft. I'll add sail plan as I draw it...but of course it is up to the builder...just like the PDs ![]() 81sf Balanced Lug. Last edited by lewisboats : 12-25-2011 at 12:15 AM. Reason: added sailplan

Well... Bah humbug! I haven't run across that one so I guess it isn't popular or perhaps well promoted. Oh well... there are multiple PDs so I guess there can be a couple of these too.

PDR's are a lot of boat in 8 feet. You could probably drive you car on to a goose and sail it through the window.

I've seen plenty of them in action...sailed a couple too. They are a little small in the cockpit area for 2 full sized US lard a$$es like my son and I. I figured the extra 2 feet of human ballast room wouldn't go amiss.

Perhaps this could be your thing. I would much rather do an EC (Ever glades Challenge) in a 10 ft boat than an 8 ft one. It would be at least a third of a knot faster and could carry more gear before the rockers went completely under. Going 25% longer adds 25% more capacity. It also makes the bottom curve finer, which may allow even more speed. I'm sure, if you actually built one, Shorty would give you his blessing and link his site to yours. He has said he would do that with anyone who came up with a box scow different from his.

| Oops. I just noticed you simply added more stations. That is one way to do it. You could also keep the old number of stations and just lengthen them by 3 inches. The second approach would give you the 25% more displacement. The flat section would be proportionately the same size as it is on the 8 ft boat, 15 inches, rather than 12 inches. Your approach would probably come reasonably close.

Stations are relative... I could show it with 15" stations or 6" stations...I simply go with a foot for convention. The actual flat section is approximately 15" on the expanded drawings...it just doesn't quite look it in the smaller pictures above. Besides... being that it breaks the rules lengthwise to start with... being just a smidge off somewhere else isn't going to make it any more illegal than it already is. The OZ PD isn't class legal and it's dimensions are considerably closer to the original than this is. I have been nudging the lines around by 1/200 to 1/100 of a foot so or just under 1/16 to 1/8th of an inch which is within the 1/4" tolerance, much like Storer did.

.I have the panel blanks cut out (eight 5' by 16.5" by 3mm birch), plenty of 3/4" x 7/8" cedar stringers, cleats and logs and have pretty much finalized how I am going to put it together. I will be gluing 1.5" closed cell foam on the panels inside the boxes to stiffen things up along with foam cross pieces every foot or so to tie the inside and outside panels together to create a box girder effect. I will be starting a thread on the build in the building section once I have something going together and have pictures of it.
