The model "Start 55" seems designed for construction in marine plywood rather than to strip planking.

That is not a 50ft strip planked boat, but a 5.5 stitch and glue plywood mini.

I'm planning to engage this company to design a boat for me. I did consider the strip 45 initially but it didn't quite meet my requirements. The designer seems to know his stuff but I'm looking for a little outside assurance before I formally engage him. Its the beginning of a large project so I am keen for some unbiased views.

You should probably check his references. They are posted on his site. The companies he claims to have done design for will tell you what kind of work they did. They may just do interior design.
