40' Barge

I am planning on building a 40'x12' barge. The original plan was to use 6 - 2"x6"x40' oak for the keel boards but these things are horrifically expensive. Will treated pine work in its place. Treated pine does not rot but it is not nearly as strong. Would like to speak with someone who has experience using pine on big boats.

Thanks for your input.
