    Howzit...
A buddy and i have bought an old courps of a boat for like R600.00, we plan to build a duplicate of this boat with a few mods of our own.
BUT... Being our first time taking on this kind of project we have a lot of questions... there is a lot of information out there but we dont seem to be finding answers to specific questions on our minds.

Planning on building out of plywood and pine

    0) In south africa, what kind of ply do we ask for? and how thick?

    1) When building the hull, do we just coat with epoxy or use the actual fiberglass sheets aswell. and what do we paint over the epoxy?

    2) Do we use epoxy to glue the hull together or do we use wood glue?

I have more questions but right now cant think past the above, since that is what we need to know to start slapping our baby together...

    Thanks for anyhelp offered...

    Regards,
    Gareth and Lu

To duplicate a boat, legal issues aside, you have to take the lines off. That is, you measure and draw the hull. If you have an original, just build everything the same.

    to add...

Thanks for the speedy reply,
we do plan to duplicate almost all, just making some "partyish" mods, like cup holders, nicer seats and generally eye-candy her up a lil. or alot...

we intend keeping the base body the same.
but we still looking for answers on what to use and so on as in previous post.

as for drawing out the hull... you have no idea... my bud Lu is a luxury trailer designer and has all the best 3d modeling software at his disposal... this is gonna be fun.... be4 we even cut the 1st piece of wood, we will have a complete 3d model to check out on computer... including the moving parts and so on...

ill post some of those pics as we start digitizing the measurement...

    thanks again

You can use epoxy or any other waterproof glue. Gorilla glue is a polyurethane that fills gaps pretty good. I don't know what kind of marine plywood you can get locally. The photos show a layer of fiberglass over the plywood. Are you really set on an identical copy or can you built something similar. You can find free or cheap plans that would have all the specs.

    Howzit Manie,

    Thanks for your advice...

We knew that when we bought her, she would never work again, for my bud and I, its all about recreating her from scratch, we both have wood working and technical drawing behind us, Lu more than I... and we were looking for something to keep us busy and he came across this dead boat at a caravan park in springs... when we saw her it was like ... there... whe found something... now that we have the sea urchin, it works as a motivational tool as well as the blue prints to this project we have taken on. We both know that its going to be a challange, but thats what we like about this.

Mark II will end up on a dump somewhere but only after Mark III comes into existance...

Like I said be4, This is gona be fun...

Thanks Manie, Im definatly gona checkout the link you suggested...

btw, do you have some pictures of the builds you have already finished, during and after construction?:?:

Manie, i see we are on the same side of the globe... could you give us some advice on where to buy the ply and epoxy, i have called around and priced marine ply, but havnt really looked for epoxy suppliers yet because i dont know what brands would be in line with boat building... also im worried that we get screwed and buy what we THINK is marine ply but isnt... i could already see in the price differences that some of the places i called probly were not quoting on the good stuff... who are your favorite suppliers... if you dont mind me asking...:?:

    Howzit

epoxy - the one and only - NOBODY ELSE
its saturday night and if had a glass of red wine so fark them :D
dont waste your time with the others

    http://www.amtcomposites.co.za/

SP106 epoxy resin with its slow hardener

i have bought MANY of the other stuff even from Cape Town - forget
AMT is good service, good price, exellent product, easy to work with
and here they stock everything you need - the whole bang shoot
and if you have read some of my drivel, my buddies down the road that are building the unmaned aircraft for the arabs buy AMT

    Marine plywood is a *****
the best so far is Schallies 012 803 9448 in Pretoria R330.00 incl vat for a sheet of 9mm BS1033 marine ply - talk to Harold (china and its GOOD)
i also got some from your CT boat outfits - not hot
as soon as they hear BOAT it becomes rocket science and double the price
most of them are ******* that sit in the YOT CLUB with a suit and tie or a blue bazer and white pants and a cravat and a white captains hat
they know every naughtical term, but when you ask them why their plywood has got holes in it they say its acceptable voids old chap :D

so now whats the plan with you okes and that bargain you got there :D :D :D

when you go around next time take pics of the edges of the ply and maybe i can help
wher the layers are joined to each other there shouldn't be a gap at all

Thanks alot Manie, they worked out well, much better pricing than what i managed to find so far.

The plan is to first model the broken boat onto a 3d modeling application, then we can make the little changes we want to and see exactly how it will look and then we will know exactly what we need to purchase. we will upload the models as we design it. we should start the actual build in the beginning of January and we will post our progress as we go....

im sure we gona run into a lot more questions as we go...:)

Thanks again for the awsome help thus far...:D

i had a close look at your pic again

i would not copy that AT ALL
that flared bow is going to give you endless trouble - wait and see

always remember the price of a plan is NOTHING in comparison of the total

your build will be ALL DONE BY YOURSELF

    Trailer R 8 000.00 single axle painted
    Motor R 50 000.00 1x50hp approx? 2 stroke
    Steering R 5 000.00 incl instuments
    Fittings R 4 000.00 just guessing
    Boat R 10 000.00 Plywood and epoxy
    Plans R 640.00 NOTHING !!!!!!

I may be a bit out on some items - but the bottom line will remain more or less the same - you'll see

this is a FAR BETTER BET

    Have to concur with Manie.

Leave the old bucket die in peace and go for a good plan. You´ll have half the labour and twice the fun. And on top of that, nobody knocks at your door and asks for your permission to copy a design!
