The following 52 links are what I consider the best boat design images from the covers of a 100 years of Popular Mechanics magazine.

Some designs are pretty wild and funny -- while others are inspiring and interesting. But all designs are marine related and should give a smile or two to fellow boat designers when the year that they were published is considered.

    Enjoy!

    Joerg Aerofoil Boat

It's interesting to note how some of these wacky looking designs have advanced over the years. For example the 1911 'winged hydroplane' seems to have been the influence for a German designer (Gunther Joerg) in the sixties and, I am sure, influenced his designs for his tandem wing Aerofoil Boats - the TAF series. See Joergs website here ... http://www.airfoil.de/

Thanks guys -- it was fun collecting the links. I had to go through a lot of views and I missed a few, but it is amazing the imagination that was and still out there regarding wild and wacky boat designs.

The Joerg Aerofoil Boat is interesting like all wingship designs. I was surprised when I saw the 1911 craft -- pretty advance for the year it was proposed. However, air-props within the seawater spray are not a good idea.

I bought several of them from the eighties & nineties and actually still have some -- the '89 Flarecraft inspired many small models I created.

There are many aeronautical concepts within these PM covers that should inspire further discussion.

    Again -- thanks!

    No, Thank You Duane !!!

Thanks, Duane - I know that you spent a lot of time going through a hundred years of covers, and you have it put together really well with all the handy links. I suspect that this thread will go on and on, and I hope it does - I have been doing some research on this topic, and hope others will come along and contribute pics and comments on these designs. I've found it difficult to find information and pics of some of these 'radical' designs. Like you say, some are great for humour, but the imagination and insight of some of these designs is amazing.

Like you, I found the 'winged hydroplane' amazing (for the year) - that was before 'ground-effect' was even being discussed by aeronautical engineers of the day - I think the first 'official studies' weren't done until 5 or 6 years later.

What do you mean you bought several of 'THEM' from the 80's - 90's ?

Also I'm sure you noticed that Joerg got around the air-prop / seawater spray problem (which was a glaring fault in the 1911 cover illustration design) - check out the AVI videos at his sight ... (no wash there, that I could see).

Great Thread! Thanks for starting it ... Cheers

    Russ

    Hi Russ,

It was because of your link from the Heliferry concept post to the PM magazine page that I found the links -- thanks. BTW -- I meant to say that I bought several PM magazines from the eighties & nineties that showed the covers.

I'll have more to say later -- we are preparing today for nearby hurricane Frances.

And thanks Will for your comment.
