Tried That

Seems suppliers don't always want to deal with ther little guy, or even more often, don't return phone calls. Its as if they just don't feel like making some extra money. I'm a carpenter myself, so I know how it is, but just trying to find some leads for this new project.

Maybe a call to a company that uses plate could be helpful.

My brother worked in Trenton for many years and it is a
different world from where I live. Here most everyone is
willing to help. A local lumber yard put me on the a place
that has blem lumber for a real bargain.

There are advantages to living in small town mid America.
This doesn't help you I know, but somewhere there is some
one to help. Call some scrap yards??

We have a company here called Fastenal. A very large company
that sells nuts, bolts, nails and such. They sell stuff by
the each if you want just a few, but they let you know
they don't care to. They are a bunch of rude people.

Avoid them at all costs!

How about ship grade plate delivered from China? Every search I do comes up with Chinese companies in this line of work.

Sure, if you trust them to deliver the same grade and quality you order (and prepay for in full) ... but when they ship you something else they won't 'make things right' by shipping you the proper materials either.

They usually don't ship less than full container loads anyways, especially with commodity items, so a small one-off boat is not worth their time -- or yours.

So much about Chinese business culture encourages them to 'cheat the other guy' that I'm always surprised when they actually do what they promise. Usually it's just the opposite, and then you end up with a never ending hassle trying to get them to 'do the right thing' ... and of course they won't because if they had any intention of doing the right thing they would have done so from the beginning.

Are any of these grades of steel OK for boatbuilding?

I have a PDF attachment here from a company dealing with Plate and what they offer, but not sure if the steel is appropriate or not. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Its interesting that no one on this board from the USA has posted any responses to such a simple question. The question was originally, where can I buy plate in the eastern US. Then I asked about different kinds of plate. Well, I did my own research and found out that ASTM A 36 is probably what I am looking for. With that knowledge I have found numerous vendors and manufacturers for this material. Just thought I would post in case any one else in the future had the same question.
